The UK Government has published its PFAS Plan: building a safer future together, setting out how it intends to manage risks from per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment.
PFAS are widely used across society – including in consumer goods, industrial processes and firefighting foams – because of their resistance to heat, water and oil. However, their widespread presence and long-lasting nature have raised concerns about potential impacts on public health, wildlife and the environment.
The Plan sets out a three-pillar, science-based approach:
- Understanding PFAS sources, including improving monitoring and evidence
- Tackling PFAS pathways, by reducing emissions and managing PFAS across their full lifecycle
- Reducing ongoing exposure, including addressing legacy contamination
It outlines indicative actions on monitoring, regulation, innovation in alternatives and public information, and confirms that work is continuing on potential UK REACH restrictions on PFAS in firefighting foams.
The Government describes the Plan as a long-term framework, developed in collaboration with devolved governments, regulators, industry and other stakeholders.
