With the UK set to ban the sale and supply of single-use vapes from 1 June 2025, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) is calling on vape users to be especially cautious when charging their devices.
As more users make the switch to rechargeable vapes, considered a greener alternative, ECFRS is drawing attention to the increased fire risk posed by lithium-ion batteries when charging.
Fire incident data shows a worrying increase in vape and e-cigarette-related fires. While only two such incidents were reported across 2021 and 2022, this number jumped to 17 across 2023 and 2024. The Fire Service is keen to address this rise by promoting early awareness and offering practical safety advice.
Andrea MacAlister, Head of Prevention at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, commented:
“The majority of vape related fires we attend are caused by unsafe charging – particularly using the wrong charger or leaving devices charging unattended. Most of these incidents are entirely preventable.
“It’s crucial to use the battery and charger that came with your vape. If you need a replacement, always buy from a reputable source. We’ve seen too many fires caused by counterfeit or incompatible chargers and batteries.
“We also recommend staying in the room while your vape is charging to quickly spot any signs of overheating or malfunction.
“And please don’t throw vape batteries in your household bin, we’ve seen a sharp rise in fires in bin lorries and recycling centres. Use a designated battery recycling point. You can find your nearest one at loveessex.org.”
Although vaping carries a lower fire risk than smoking, charging devices still presents serious hazards if not done properly.
To help reduce these risks, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service offers the following guidance:
- Always use the battery and charger that comes with your vape
- Never leave a vape or e-cigarette charging unattended
- Avoid mixing parts from different vape or e-cigarette models
- Only purchase devices, batteries, and chargers from reputable retailers
- Ensure your vape or e-cigarette is CE certified
ECFRS also provides free home fire safety visits to Essex residents, aimed at identifying and reducing fire hazards in the home environment.
