The updated draft of BS EN 3-7: Portable fire extinguishers – Part 7: Characteristics, performance requirements and test methods is now available for public comment.

This standard outlines the key characteristics, performance criteria, and test methods for portable fire extinguishers. Among other important clarifications, it notes:

  • Suitability for Class C (gaseous) fires is at the manufacturer’s discretion, and only applies to powder extinguishers with a Class B or Class A and B rating.
  • The standard excludes performance testing for Class D (flammable metal) fires, though general powder extinguisher requirements still apply to extinguishers claiming Class D suitability.
  • Powder and CO₂ extinguishers are excluded for Class F (cooking oil/fat) fires, due to safety risks.
  • Note: Testing for Class D fires remains case-specific due to the unique nature of each scenario, making standardised test fires impractical.

If you’d like your feedback to be considered in the FIA’s formal submission, please use the attached comments template and send your responses to [email protected] by 6th June 2025. Comments will be reviewed at a special Extinguishing Media Technical Committee (EMTC) meeting on 10th June.
