Are low-level controllers required in domestic fire alarm systems, and does adding a battery-powered controller affect the system’s Grade?

The FIA’s new Technical Bulletin, The use of Low-Level Controllers within BS 5839-6 Domestic Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems, addresses these common questions and explains the considerations surrounding their use.

Developed by the FIA Smoke Alarm Devices Working Group, the bulletin clarifies the position within BS 5839-6 and the accessibility guidance in Approved Document M. It explores how accessible controls can help occupants carry out routine testing, silence unwanted alarms and operate their systems more easily, particularly where reaching ceiling-mounted alarms presents difficulties.

The document also addresses the misconception that adding a battery-powered controller automatically reduces the system’s Grade, explaining the importance of compatibility and maintaining the performance and integrity of the fire detection and alarm system.

Written for designers, installers, system specifiers and FIA member organisations, the bulletin provides practical guidance to support informed decisions about when and how low-level controllers can benefit occupants.
