The FIA’s Scope of Works for Fire Engineers has been fully updated for today’s regulatory landscape.
The original 2015 guidance set out the role of the fire engineer across a project. But the industry has changed. With the Building Safety Act 2022 and new duties under Part 2A of the Building Regulations, clarity, coordination, and accountability are no longer optional—they’re essential.
Version 2 (April 2026) delivers exactly that.
What’s changed?
- Built for modern regulation
Fully aligned with current legal requirements, including cooperation, coordination, and competence duties. - Clear scope, less risk
Introduces the Fire Engineer’s Responsibility Matrix (FERM)—a practical tool defining exactly what gets reviewed, when, and to what level. - No more grey areas
Removes ambiguity around responsibilities between fire engineers, designers, and contractors. - Stronger project outcomes
Supports compliance at every stage—from concept design through to handover and Gateway submissions.
Why it matters
- The old approach defined the role.
- This update defines the responsibility.
- In a post-Grenfell, compliance-driven environment, that distinction is critical.
