More residents will be kept safe in their homes, while leaseholders could benefit from reduced monthly costs, following the Government’s allocation of £62.7 million for fire alarm systems in at-risk buildings. The new Interim Measures Alarm Fund is designed to support the installation of common fire alarms in buildings awaiting remediation.

This funding builds on the Waking Watch Replacement Fund, which closed on 31 March, and aligns with commitments set out in the Remediation Acceleration Plan update.

The scheme will help residents remain safe during remediation works and reduce reliance on costly interim measures, which have placed a significant financial burden on leaseholders.

Since 2021, the Waking Watch Replacement Fund has approved around £71.7 million to install fire alarms in over 800 buildings, improving safety and delivering average savings of approximately £273 per month for leaseholders.

Accelerating remediation

Following the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Panel’s final report, the Government committed to accelerating remediation. The Remediation Acceleration Plan, published in December 2024, outlines actions to address key barriers and speed up progress.

The Plan focuses on three priorities: accelerating building remediation, identifying all residential buildings over 11 metres with unsafe cladding, and supporting affected residents.

The new fund replaces the Waking Watch Replacement Fund and will provide ongoing support throughout the Government’s remediation programmes, currently expected to run until 2035. It will be delivered by Homes England via the Cladding Safety Scheme platform.
