Four properties have been seriously damaged following a large fire in Ash Keys, Crawley, West Sussex.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to the incident at approximately 2:40pm on Monday. Eight fire engines attended the scene, where a total of 10 properties were affected, with the fire also spreading to nearby gardens.

Firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control and extinguish the fire. Residents were advised to avoid the area and to keep doors and windows closed while crews dealt with the incident.

As periods of warm, dry weather increase the risk of outdoor fires, the fire and rescue service is reminding the public to take simple precautions to help prevent incidents. People are urged to avoid using disposable barbecues and lighting bonfires, dispose of smoking materials responsibly, remove litter that could ignite, and report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999.

"The Fire Severity Index remains very high in West Sussex due to the prolonged warm, dry weather," they added.
