FIA Working Group 27 Supports Euralarm Position on Radio Linked Sounders and VADs
The Fire Industry Association’s Working Group 27 (Alarm Devices) has supported a new Euralarm position paper addressing how sounders and visual alarm devices (VADs) that use radio frequency links are assessed and certified.
The paper examines differing interpretations of the harmonised versions of EN 54-3, for sounders, and EN 54-23, for VADs. In particular, questions have arisen because their scopes refer to devices powered through a physical electrical connection, while radio linked devices may use an internal power supply.
Euralarm considers these product standards alongside EN 54-25, which covers components using radio links and includes requirements for internal autonomous power supplies. Its conclusion is that there is no technical reason why a radio linked sounder or VAD cannot be assessed using harmonised standards. The paper sets out five points supporting that position and discusses possible approaches to certification.
WG27’s support reflects the importance of a clear and consistent approach to assessing these devices. The paper also records that interpretations among notified bodies have differed, so manufacturers should discuss the assessment and certification route for a particular product with their notified body.
