A fire believed to have been caused by an e-scooter battery has left a family unable to return to their home in Basildon.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service was called to the property at approximately 10:03 on Saturday, after an e-scooter battery that had been left charging overnight caught fire.
On arrival, firefighters found the property heavily smoke-logged, with a fire in the kitchen.
Fortunately, no one was injured. However, the incident highlights the potential fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, particularly when devices are left charging unattended or for extended periods.
Fire and rescue services continue to urge people to take care when charging e-bikes and e-scooters, including following manufacturers’ instructions, using the correct charger and avoiding leaving batteries on charge overnight or unattended.
Joe Fisher, watch manager from Rayleigh Fire Station, said: "Thankfully the residents acted quickly to get out of the house straight away while calling 999, as e-scooter batteries can explode under high temperatures.
"Crews then worked quickly to get the fire under control and prevent it spreading to the house next door.
"We highly recommend people keep a close eye when charging e-scooters as the batteries can very quickly overheat."
He urged people to only buy from reputable retailers.
