Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has issued an important safety warning about charging e-bikes and e-scooters overnight following a house fire in which one person was injured.

Five fire crews attended the incident at a three-storey property on Westleigh Road in Leicester’s West End at approximately 04:30 BST on Sunday.

The occupant was treated at the scene by paramedics for burns and smoke inhalation.

The fire is believed to have originated from an e-bike that was charging at the time. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding residents that lithium-ion batteries can pose a serious fire risk if they are damaged, overcharged, or charged using an incompatible charger.

The Service is urging people not to charge e-bikes or e-scooters overnight or while unattended. Residents are also encouraged to ensure smoke alarms are installed and working correctly, and to keep internal doors closed at night or when leaving the property.

In this incident, a closed door helped prevent the fire from spreading from the corridor into the kitchen, limiting the extent of the damage.
