A major woodland and grass fire near Macclesfield, Cheshire, is believed to have been caused by a discarded disposable barbecue, according to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters were called to Hacked Way Lane shortly after 4pm on Tuesday, where they tackled a significant wildfire that continued overnight. At the height of the incident, 10 fire engines and specialist wildfire units were in attendance, supported by United Utilities, which carried out water drops by helicopter.

Crews remained at the scene on Wednesday morning, with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service identifying a discarded disposable barbecue as the probable cause of the fire.

The incident highlights the serious consequences that seemingly small acts of carelessness can have, particularly during periods of prolonged warm and dry weather when vegetation is highly susceptible to ignition.

Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area while firefighting operations continue. The fire service warned that conditions can change rapidly, with heavy smoke posing a risk to nearby communities. Residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed, while motorists were asked not to obstruct access routes required by emergency vehicles.

Firefighters are continuing to use specialist wildfire equipment and sector-based firefighting tactics to contain the blaze and prevent further spread.
