The British Standards Institution (BSI) has published a revised edition of BS 8214, Fire-Resisting and Smoke Control Doors – Code of Practice. The 2026 version replaces the withdrawn 2016 edition and introduces significant updates aligned with current legislation and industry practice.
The scope now includes fire door assemblies of all materials, such as timber, steel, aluminium and composites, supported by material-specific annexes. Importantly, the Standard introduces new guidance for metal and composite doors, addressing a previous gap, and clarifies installation requirements to reduce the risk of non-compliance.
Smoke control guidance has been updated in line with BS 9991, including best practice for under-door gaps. The revision also reflects post-Brexit regulatory changes, including UKCA and CE marking, alongside requirements introduced by the Building Safety Act 2022 and Fire Safety Act 2021.
Developed with input from industry, certification bodies and regulators, BS 8214:2026 supports the effective performance of fire doors in both new-build and refurbishment projects, helping to protect escape routes and limit fire and smoke spread.
The Standard is relevant to all stakeholders involved in the specification, installation, inspection and maintenance of fire doors. Its adoption promotes consistent best practice, contributing to safer buildings and improved fire safety outcomes.
