More than 500 delegates have now completed the FIA’s BS 5839-1 Update CPD through our on-demand seminar, giving us a clear picture of how professionals are engaging with this important update to the fire detection and fire alarm systems standard. Purchase the standard here, please note members get a discount when purchasing through the FIA website.
What we found is encouraging: the overwhelming majority are taking their learning seriously, completing the content properly, and earning their CPD certificates the right way.
Over 500 Professionals Updating Their Knowledge
The popularity of the BS 5839-1 Update CPD speaks for itself. Hundreds of people across the fire sector are choosing to stay informed through this on-demand route, demonstrating that structured, high-quality CPD still carries real value in our industry.
Strong Engagement from the Majority
The seminar runs for ninety minutes, with a requirement to watch at least an hour before completing the test. Our review shows that around 85 to 90 percent of delegates easily meet this requirement.
This is exactly what we want to see. Professionals giving their full attention to the technical detail, refreshing their understanding of the standard, and treating CPD as more than a tick-box exercise.
A Small Percentage Highlights Why Standards Matter
Around 10 to 15 percent of participants did not meet the minimum viewing time. The most common query the Training Team receives is:
“Why haven’t I got my CPD certificate?”
The answer is simple:
they didn’t watch enough of the seminar to earn it.
Far from being a negative, this small proportion underscores why we check participation. If CPD is to mean anything, it must represent genuine learning. Upholding that standard protects everyone who does the work properly.
CPD That Holds Its Value
The findings from this single seminar reinforce a clear message: the fire industry wants credible CPD, and professionals are willing to put the time in to keep their knowledge up to date.
By maintaining engagement thresholds and ensuring certificates are earned, not assumed, the FIA continues to safeguard the integrity of CPD and the quality of competency across the sector.
