The Fire Industry Association (FIA) will be back again at FIREX International this year with a full timetable of seminars from a range of experts.  Topics encompass updates to standards, the impact of Brexit on business in the fire safety arena, and the future of qualifications.

Speakers include CEO Ian Moore, General Manager of the FIA Martin Duggan, Chairman Martin Harvey, Technical Manager Will Lloyd and Tracy Kirk, Chair of the FIA’s Export Council.  Their years of experience in the industry will no doubt deliver useful new information and insight.

Day 1 – 20th June 2017

10:20 – 10:50 – New Fire Detection & Alarm qualifications – with a special focus on Maintenance

General Manager Martin Duggan presents this informative and interactive session. The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has become a recognised awarding Organisation that can register qualifications on the National Curriculum. Four FD&A qualifications have been announced (Design, Install, Commissioning & Maintenance). Find out what the thinking behind this move was and what the vision is. How will it work? This session will look at the specifics for the Maintenance qualification.

15:00 – 15:30 – Update on BS 5983-1:2017 including False Alarm and Fire Signalling to an ARC

FIA Technical Manager Will Lloyd presents this useful standard update.  The session will cover an overview of the changes made to the new edition of BS5983-1:2017, plus point out the issues with next generation networks when fire alarms relay signals to alarm receiving centres.

Day 2 – 21st June 2017

Martin Harvey, Chairman of the FIA presents this lively and informative session about the integration of fire and security systems.  He will look at some interesting commonly asked questions, such as ‘What is the correct balance for integrated fire, safety, and security?’ and whether there is a disproportionate focus on security and energy management.

16:00 - Integration of Fire Detection into the Smart Building Environment – The Do’s and don’ts

FIA Chairman Martin Harvey will be presenting another insightful session.  This discussion will look at the trend to move building products into Smart Building solutions. This may offer tremendous benefits – however, care needs to be taken when integrating life safety systems to ensure safety is not compromised.

14:00 – 14:50 – Panel discussion: Fire safety & Brexit – what does the future hold?

CEO of the FIA, Ian Moore, hosts this panel discussion about the future of fire safety in light of the Brexit vote.  Ian is joined by Tracy Kirk, Chair of the FIA’s Export Council, who will provide insight into trading in Europe and beyond; Carl Hunter, CEO of Coltraco, who will provide key business insight; and James Wilson, Standards and Publishing Manager at BSI who will be able to answer key questions about the future of standards in the fire industry.
