Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service is investing £3.6 million in 11 new fire appliances as part of its ongoing fleet renewal programme, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining a modern, resilient and effective emergency response capability.
The new B Type fire engines are currently in production and are expected to enter operational service at fire stations across Suffolk between November and December 2026.
Built on a 16-tonne 4x2 chassis, the standard B Type appliances (FL816) are manufactured by Volvo in Sweden before undergoing a multi-stage specialist build process. Following the installation of crew cabs in the Netherlands, the vehicles are transported to Emergency One in Scotland, where they are fitted with firefighting equipment, including water pumps and associated operational systems.
Once the specialist engineering work is complete, the appliances will be delivered to the Service’s fleet workshop in Ipswich ahead of their deployment across the county.
Designed to respond to a wide range of emergencies, the new vehicles will provide firefighters with modern, reliable equipment that supports safe and effective operational response.
The investment forms part of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service’s wider strategy to modernise its fleet and ensure crews have access to the resources they need to protect communities and respond to incidents efficiently.
The appliances are currently undergoing final fitting and testing and are expected to be delivered later this year, further enhancing the Service’s ability to maintain high standards of emergency response and community safety across Suffolk.
