Elderly man dead after Fife care home blaze

18 Feb 2011

An elderly man has died following a fire in the smoking room of a care home in an eastern region of Scotland.

The 69-year-old man was having a cigarette in the designated room of Henderson House in Dalgety Bay, Fife last Friday (February 11th) when staff were alerted to a blaze by the fire alarm system.

Staff members battled the flames with fire extinguishers and the resident was taken to hospital, where he later died. Two care home workers were treated for smoke inhalation.

A Fife Constabulary spokesman told the East Lothian Courier: "We were contacted by the ambulance service at 8.50am who told us one male occupant was injured." He confirmed that the fire was extinguished by staff members.

Fire risk assessments are legally mandated in Scotland for all commercial properties and houses of multiple occupancy under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005.

The establishment's Duty Holder faces prosecution if the fire risk assessment is insufficiently conducted.
