If you’re familiar with the industry and technology, then you’ve likely heard of the Internet of Things (IoT). The concept and technology are quickly becoming more popular in the world of fire detection, suppression and installation.

But what exactly is it, and how does it work? In this article, we will explore the fundamentals of IoT, how it works, and its potential applications for you and your business.

It is key to note, we are proud to announce that FIA Members will be able to obtain a 10% reduction of all pre-certification fees related to the Kitemark certification for BSI's Internet of things devices Kitemark.

What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

The Internet of Things, or IoT, is a system of interconnected devices and sensors that collect and share data about themselves and their surroundings. The data collected by IoT devices can be used to automate tasks, improve efficiency, and make better decisions.

IoT also has the potential to improve public safety by giving first responders real-time information about emergencies as they unfold. This allows there to be a potential of saving lives and helps us conserve resources by giving us a better understanding of how they’re being used.

How does the IoT work?

The internet of things, or IoT, is a system of interconnected devices and sensors that collect and share data about their surroundings. The data collected by these devices and sensors can be used to monitor and control the environment around them, or to provide information that can be used to improve efficiency and productivity.

Within fire industry the main use is around ability to monitor the performance of the fire detection device remotely, ability to test performance of the system from the remote location and also to be able to quickly identify area where the device was triggered and respond accordingly.

The Benefits of the IoT

The IoT can bring many benefits to individuals, businesses, and society as a whole. Here are just a few examples:

1. Increased efficiency and productivity: The IoT can help businesses and organizations become more efficient and productive by automating tasks, reducing downtime, and improving communication and collaboration.

2. Improved decision-making: The IoT can help businesses make better decisions by providing them with real-time data from a variety of sources.

3. Greater insights: The IoT can help businesses gain valuable insights into their operations and customers by collecting and analyzing data from a variety of devices and sensors.

4. Enhanced customer experiences: The IoT can help businesses provide enhanced customer experiences by personalizing products and services and offering new features and services.

5. New business models: The IoT can enable businesses to create new business models that are based on the collection and analysis of data from connected devices.

Why have product third party tested?

With the raising number of IoT connected devices, the market observe the raise of cyber incidents where such devices experience unauthorized access for various purposes – ranging from nuisance, through attempt from stopping the device working though to access data stored for the crime purposes.

With the growth of cyber crime and methods that criminals are using to access the devices, products that provide life critical protection such fire detection devices, it become extremely important to ensure that these devices are protected against cyber attacks to be the best possible levels. This is of the key importance as cyber attack targeting IoT element of the device can not only stop this element from displaying reliable information, but also in some cases influence the actual performance of the traditional products i.e., disable smoke alarm from detecting smoke.

In the market where there is not relevant legislation available yet, it is important to search for the best practice to provide with the guidance and test that will ensure product security and performance.

Manufacturers can be lost in several different pieces of technical specifications, guidance documents and technical documents available. Choosing and testing ones that are the most relevant to their devices can be a daunting exercise. To help members navigate through this complex arena, FIA partnered with BSI who offer the Kitemark scheme that looks at the latest version of relevant standards, provide testing and certification to give members a peace of mind when protecting IoT enabled devices against cyber-crimes.

What benefit does this have for my business?

The BSI Kitemark is the ultimate mark of quality, safety and trust. Benefitting from this allows you to differentiate your device from other products on the market, enhance your reputation and boost customer confidence Kitemark certification is the logical choice. BSI Kitemark certification proves that a device has been tested for functionality, interoperability and security as well as on an ongoing basis to make sure that standards do not slip or change over time. Internet of Things Devices Benefits of Kitemark certification Achieving BSI Kitemark certification can help you to:

  • Build and protect your brand
  • Increase your customer base and customer satisfaction
  • Command price premiums
  • Gain competitive advantage

Overall, the BSI Kitemark certification proves that a device has been tested for functionality, interoperability and security as well as on an ongoing basis to make sure that standards do not slip or change over time and obtaining this certification should be a logical decision to undertake.
