Fire Detection & Alarm Systems – Design (FIA Essentials)

Fire detection and alarm system design principles to BS 5839-1

The Design Essentials Two Days course provides a practical foundation in the design of fire detection and alarm systems to BS 5839-1.

Developed for those involved in the specification, design or management of fire alarm systems, the course guides delegates through the key principles and practical considerations required when developing compliant and effective system designs.

Delegates will explore the design process from establishing customer requirements and determining appropriate system categories and evacuation strategies through to device selection, zoning, power supplies, system interfaces and certification.

The course focuses on applying design principles in practice, helping delegates understand how the different elements of a fire detection and alarm system come together to meet the requirements of the specification, relevant standards and the needs of the premises.

Important - course status

Design Essentials is a training course and does not lead to a regulated qualification.

The course is designed to develop and test delegates' knowledge of the subjects covered. Delegates will complete an FIA assessment as part of the course, but successful completion should not be considered equivalent to achieving a regulated fire detection and alarm qualification.

Those requiring a regulated qualification should consider the FIA's relevant Fundamentals and Advanced qualification pathways.

This course is suitable for:

  • Fire alarm system designers
  • Project engineers and technical managers
  • Consultants and specifiers
  • Commissioning engineers seeking a greater understanding of system design
  • Those involved in the specification or management of fire detection and alarm systems
  • Anyone responsible for helping to ensure fire alarm system compliance and performance

The course covers the key considerations involved in designing fire detection and alarm systems, including:

  • Relevant legislation and standards
  • BS 5839-1 and its application to system design
  • Establishing and interpreting customer requirements
  • Evacuation strategies
  • Fire alarm system categories
  • Selection and siting of detection and alarm devices
  • Power supplies and system loading calculations
  • Detection and alarm zones
  • False alarm management
  • Interfacing with ancillary systems
  • Design documentation
  • Certification requirements
  • Maintenance considerations
  • Future system modification and expansion

On completion of the course, delegates should be able to:

  • Understand the requirements of BS 5839-1 relevant to system design
  • Identify suitable system categories and evacuation strategies
  • Interpret customer requirements and specifications
  • Select and site detection and alarm devices appropriately
  • Calculate power supply and loading requirements
  • Apply appropriate zoning requirements
  • Understand the requirements for interfacing with ancillary systems
  • Consider the management and reduction of false alarms
  • Produce appropriate design documentation and certification
  • Consider maintenance and future system expansion during the design process

Assessment

Delegates will complete an FIA assessment to test their understanding of the subjects covered during the course.

The assessment is intended to demonstrate understanding of the course content and does not result in the award of a regulated qualification.

Looking for a regulated qualification?

If you are looking to achieve a regulated qualification in fire detection and alarm systems, Design Essentials is not a substitute for the FIA's qualification pathway.

Please see our Fundamentals and Advanced training and qualifications for courses leading to formally recognised qualifications.
