-
Duration: 2 days
-
Format: Practical, workshop-based with live systems
-
Assessment: Continuous observation + supporting documentation
-
Certification: Graded FIA Certificate (Pass, Credit, Distinction)
This course is particularly suited to those who have already completed the Fundamentals pathway, as well as delegates who have undertaken advanced modules such as Installer, Maintainer, or Commissioner. It provides concentrated, hands-on practice that builds on prior learning, bridging the gap between theory and confident field performance.
It is also ideal for any of the following:
-
FD&A Installers who want to gain confidence in practical tasks
-
Those who have previously shadowed others on site and want guided practice
-
Installers who may only carry out part of the installation process but wish to gain a full understanding of the process from start to finish.
-
Maintenance technicians seeking installation/commissioning experience (and vice versa)
-
People returning to the trade after a break
-
Skilled workers from related disciplines (electrical, security, building services) who want to develop fire alarm skills
No formal qualifications are required. Some prior exposure to fire detection and fire alarm systems or electrical work is recommended, as the course is intensive and fast-paced. Beginners are welcome, but should be familiar with hand tools and safe working practices.
Delegates must bring:
-
Safety footwear and appropriate workwear
-
Basic hand tools (screwdrivers, cutters, etc.)
Delegates will be issued with a system installation specification before the course. Reviewing this document in advance will:
-
Provide context for the tasks to be carried out
-
Reduce time spent getting up to speed on site
-
Maximise time on practical activities during the two days
Day 1: Installation
- Installing cabling and system devices
- Installation planning and documentation
- Observed installation exercise
Day 2: Commissioning & Maintenance
- Functional testing and fault-finding
- Electrical testing and battery calculations
- Preventive maintenance routines
- Commissioning and maintenance documentation, system handovers
- Assessed commissioning and maintenance exercise
Assessment is continuous and practical, with grading designed to recognise different levels of achievement. Delegates will be observed carrying out installation, commissioning, and maintenance activities, as well as completing supporting documentation.
Performance is graded as Pass, Credit, or Distinction:
-
Pass – Safe working demonstrated and minimum requirements for each task are met.
-
Credit – A solid standard of work with good accuracy and consistency, going beyond the basics.
-
Distinction – High standard throughout, with excellent attention to detail, efficiency, and best practice.
Delegates who do not initially meet the required standard will be supported to address issues where possible.
Grading not only recognises achievement during the course but also provides delegates with a clear, graded FIA Certificate — a tangible record of competence that can be shown to employers, clients, or trade bodies.
CPD Hours for this course are 13.
This course delivers practical, workplace-ready skills that benefit both the delegate and their employer:
- Proven competence – A graded FIA Certificate provides trusted evidence of skills for compliance, client assurance, and inspections.
- Reduced risk on site – Delegates practise safe working on live systems, improving confidence and reducing costly errors.
- Improved efficiency – Staff trained across installation, commissioning, and maintenance keep projects moving without delays between specialists.
- Flexible workforce – Multi-skilled technicians make resourcing easier and give companies more options when scheduling jobs.
- Motivation and retention – Investing in staff training boosts morale, loyalty, and performance.
- Competitive edge – Employers can demonstrate a trained, competent workforce when bidding for work or meeting rising industry standards.
