The FIA has published a new Environmental Guidance Legislative Overview, replacing the withdrawn Fact File 36 (2009) and reflecting the latest UK environmental legislation post-Brexit.

The guidance focuses on England and Wales (with separate regimes applying in Scotland and Northern Ireland) and is intended to raise members’ awareness of the environmental legislation that may affect fire protection companies. It is not an exhaustive list of legal requirements, and responsibility for compliance remains with individual organisations.

Written from an environmental protection perspective, the document summarises key UK legislation covering climate change controls, sustainable design, pollution permitting, waste management and chemical restrictions. It includes updates on F-gases and ozone-depleting substances, eco-design, construction products, environmental permitting, WEEE, hazardous waste, packaging, PFAS, UK REACH, RoHS and the implications of the Environment Act 2021.

The guidance also highlights emerging requirements around sustainability, environmental reporting and circular economy principles, helping members prepare for future regulatory change.
