Huge blaze gutted premises in Coventry

06 May 2015

A factory belonging to a shoe manufacturer, United Footwear in Coventry, which was wrecked by a huge fire this week will be demolished.

Fire chiefs say that the building is beyond repair after the blaze, which required the intervention of 100 firefighters and 16 fire engines, devastated the premises in the early hours of 3 May.

Steve Harris, Incident Commander for West Midlands Fire Service said: “The fire appears to have started at the back of the building and spread throughout the whole property.

“There were some large flames and plumes of smoke.

“We faced some significantly challenging conditions. We had to work fast and effectively to protect surrounding properties.

“We knew we would be struggling to save United Footwear but there was some effective fire fighting to save surrounding businesses.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
