Parliamentary Seminar - Fire Protection Systems in 21st Century Buildings
The latest in the series of annual seminars presented at Westminster by the All-Party Parliamentary Fire Safety & Rescue Group will take place on 8 March 2010, with 'Fire Protection Systems in 21st Century Buildings' the headline topic.
The seminar is sponsored by the Fire Industry Association (FIA) and provides an excellent opportunity for the various stakeholders within the fire protection arena to come together to debate the issues that affect those involved in protecting buildings, and their occupants, from fire. This year the focus will be very much on how changes in building design and construction have impacted significantly on fire safety provision. The complexity of today's buildings presents significant challenges. With some 70 percent of construction now carried out by specialist trades, the increased used of modern construction methods, and building management systems becoming an ever more common feature as we focus on how to improve the energy efficiency of our buildings, effective fire protection becomes an increasingly complex process. What might be acceptable to the Building Control Enforcer may not be to the Fire & Rescue Service.
It is this need for all parties involved to work together, recognising the implications of their own role and its impact in fire safety terms, that is the stimulus for this year's seminar topic. The seminar will see representatives from all key groups, including speakers from building control, government (Communities and Local Government department), insurance and fire risk assessment, with a series of presentations in the morning followed by a debate in the afternoon.
Becky Reid, FIA Marketing Manager, comments - "The parliamentary seminar has become an important date in the fire safety calendar. Last year's event - 'Decisions to take in tough times' - sold out, with many of our own members not only attending but taking the opportunity to raise their own issues and concerns. It really is one of the best opportunities to contribute to the fire safety debate and I expect this year's programme to once again attract great interest."
