Tyre store to be demolished after fire

07 Feb 2012

A tyre store in Bradford is set to be demolished after a fire tore through the building on Sunday (5th February).

Demolition experts were poised to pull down The Tyre Station building at Hollins Hill in Baildon following the blaze which burnt through 7,000 tyres.

Fire crews from across the region were called to tackle the blaze, which was complicated by the presence of exploding gas cylinders stored in the building.

Lee Miller, Shipley watch commander, revealed officers had struggled to put out the fire because the building had been in danger of collapsing.

He told the Bradford Telegraph and Argus: "There was up to 7,000 tyres involved and it caused quite a serious fire. The difficulty for us was that to put out the fire, we have to get in among it but the lack of the building's structural stability was not allowing us to get in."

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, a fire risk assessment must be conducted on all commercial properties in England and Wales.

If a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment is not carried out, the Responsible Person faces up to two years in prison or an unlimited fine.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
