Somerset care home hit by fire

07 Feb 2012

A care home in Somerset has been damaged after a fire broke out in the building yesterday afternoon (6th February).

Two fire engines were called to the Sunnymeade Care Home in Chard just before 3.15pm, reports This is the West Country.

The blaze, which started in a bedroom, was quickly brought under control and caused minimal damage to the care home.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Smoke detectors were fitted and activated which alerted the Careline service who in turn contacted us."

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, a fire risk assessment must be conducted on all commercial properties in England and Wales.

If a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment is not carried out, the Responsible Person faces up to two years in prison or an unlimited fine.

No-one was injured in the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault in a lamp.
