Residents evacuated from Leominster sheltered housing

24 Jan 2011

Firefighters were called to a blaze at sheltered accommodation in Herefordshire last week and had to help evacuate 27 residents.

The local fire service was informed about the conflagration at the flats, based in the market town of Leominster, by an automatic fire detection and alarm system, reports the Hereford Times.

Six firefighters from the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service brought the fire under control by 6.30.

Phil Major, the local fire station's commander, told the news provider that the station helps those in the sheltered accommodation flats check fire alarms and maintain good fire safety.

"There's been close liaison between officers from the local fire station and staff from the sheltered housing scheme to ensure that effective fire safety procedures are in place," he said.

A fire risk assessment must be carried out on all houses of multiple occupancy, such as flats of sheltered accommodation, under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
