London gym evacuated following fire

24 Jan 2012

A gym in London had to be evacuated last week after a fire broke out in the premises.

Around 30 firefighters and six fire engines were called to the LA Fitness gym in Orpington on 18th January at around 7.45am.

Eleven people were led to safety, while two members of staff were taken to hospital after suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.

The conflagration, which caused severe damage to the sauna and swimming pool area, was brought under just control just after 10.15am.

Sally Cartwright, Sidcup fire station manager, who was at the scene, said: "We got to the scene quickly and crews worked really hard to bring the fire under control.

"Our fire investigators will now be carrying out a thorough investigation to figure out how the blaze started."

A 'suitable and sufficient' fire risk assessment must be conducted on all commercial properties in England and Wales, under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

If the fire risk assessment is deemed to be carried out to an insufficient extent, the Responsible Person can face an unlimited fine or a prison sentence of up to two years.
