Fire crews battle Sunderland warehouse blaze

Two industrial units in a warehouse in Sunderland have been completely destroyed by a large-scale fire.

Fire crews were called to the industrial estate off Chaytor Grove in Hendon at around 1.40am today (26thJanuary).

One unit used for making furniture and a car repairs business were destroyed in the blaze, while a third unit also suffered minor damage.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service are still dampening down the site, which has an asbestos roof and is reported to house around nine gas cylinders.

A fire risk assessment must be conducted on all commercial properties in England and Wales, in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

If a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment is not carried out, the Responsible Person faces up to two years in prison or an unlimited fine.

No-one was injured in the blaze, which is currently being investigated by the police.
