12 June 2012 by Martin Cahillane, Marketing Intern

On Monday I started my summer internship at the Fire Industry Association. Having been a university student in Nottingham for the last two years I look forward to the 9-5 rather more than some would have anticipated given the sleeping pattern that a typical student has.

I hope to substitute being taught content by lecturers and tutors for picking up skills working within the marketing department at the FIA .Over the eight weeks I look forward to gaining practical experience and knowledge of how a not for profit organization works in relation to more commercially focused organisations.

My experience of fire protection is limited to childhood camping trips and cooking mishaps at university however the importance of fire protection has never been lost on me as it seems a week doesn’t go by without the news reporting a fire somewhere in the world endangering human lives.

During my time at the FIA I will be interested to learn about the various fire safety systems available for the different organisations out there and the requirements that they must adhere too. After a read of the training brochure I look forward to getting to grips with the 17 different courses provided by the FIA and using my marketing skills gained from my study of business at university to help in some way market them effectively.

I will be working with Monica and Becky during my time here and look forward to providing assistance for upcoming events such as the London Fire safety Seminar and the Leicester Regional Road show as well as the FIA social media workshop and also helping to deliver more traditional methods of marketing.

Aside from marketing my passion and interest is anything to do with football, I love it!

I look forward to meeting most of the FIA team in the next few weeks so don’t be afraid to say hello.
