Unit 2 & 3 - Advanced Detection Design & Advanced Alarm Design

Delegates enrolling for these Units should have passed Unit 1 – Fire Detection Design before proceeding. This two day course comprises units intended for those working principally in system design, estimating and planning fire protection schemes. They will benefit designers, consultants and system house engineers.

Course prices: £300 per delegate (FIA Members); £450 per delegate (Non Members). Prices are subject to VAT at the current rate.

Advanced Detection Design (day 1)

  • The application of BS 5839-1 (2002) for detector coverage and spacing
  • Efficient usage of detectors
  • Effect of obstructions, such as beams
  • The effect of pitched roofs for all types of detector
  • The categories of protection in the latest Code of Practice
  • Detection in voids, lift shafts and stairways

    Advanced Alarm Design (day 2)

  • Detailed design calculations for alarms
  • The effect of ambient noise
  • The recommendations for alarm zones and phased evacuation
  • Communications with the fire service
  • Cable limitations, especially for loops
  • The recommendations for network cables
  • Battery calculations for standby and alarm durations

    Delegates will be given substantial tests to consolidate the course presentation, concluding with a scheme design for alarms. Delegates attaining the 75% pass mark will be awarded the FIA nationally recognized certificate.
