Description

In association with the Industry Committee for Emergency Lighting (ICEL), the Fire Industry Association (FIA) now offers emergency lighting training courses based on BS 5266 part 1 complementing the well-established courses related to fire detection and alarm systems.

The one day emergency lighting course is intended for engineers with some basic knowledge of lamps and light fittings providing the essential basics for new engineers and new information for the more experienced such as the new servicing and testing requirements in BS 5266 part 8: 2004.

Course delegates are given test sheets throughout the day, culminating in designing an emergency lighting scheme for a simple building. Those achieving the 75% “pass mark” will be awarded an official FIA - ICEL certificate.

The one-day course covers:-

  • Basic regulations, relevant standards, and the need for emergency lighting
  • Types of emergency lighting describing self contained, central systems with slave luminaires and conversions of luminaires for emergency use
  • Exit sign pictograms, luminance and viewing distances
  • Luminance requirements, lux levels, uniformity and duration requirements
  • Emergency lighting of cinema and theatre auditoria
  • Choosing maintained or non-maintained luminaires
  • Design procedures covering all points of emphasis - e.g. stairs
  • Using manufacturers’ spacing tables for escape routes and open areas
  • Simple designs for high risk areas
  • Conversion of mains luminaires for emergency use, to achieve the lux levels discussed previously and using conversion spacing tables
  • Disability glare and colour requirements
  • Basic installation, wiring and fuse protection
  • Testing and servicing to BS 5266 part 8
  • Automatic testing
  • Summary and final test

Courses are held in various locations throughout the UK and are of one day duration, 9am to 5pm, with the fee inclusive of learning materials, lunch and refreshments. The first of these courses will be held at the FIA headquarters at Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey.
