Cricket clubhouse destroyed in blaze

27 Jan 2012

A clubhouse at a cricket club in Hampshire was destroyed last weekend after a bungled robbery led to a fire breaking out on the site.

Fire crews were called to Odiham & Greywell Cricket Club in the early hours of Saturday morning (22nd January).

Firefighters were unable to save the wooden pavilion, while various pieces of cricket memorabilia were also lost in the blaze.

It is believed that the fire was caused by a spark from an angle grinder which thieves used to prize open the club's safe. Local police and fire officers have launched a joint investigation to confirm the cause of the blaze.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, a fire risk assessment - which aims to identify and negate any fire hazards - must be conducted on all commercial properties in England and Wales.

If a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment is not carried out, the Responsible Person faces up to two years in prison or an unlimited fine.
