Description

The aim of this seminar is to alert all Responsible Persons & duty holders; warehouse owners & operators; facilities managers; health & safety managers; building designers & consultants; and also those who use third party warehouses about the importance and benefits of incorporating fire safety management protection measures into their buildings and to help them provide a safe, worry free environment for employers, owners, insurers and staff alike.

Fires in Warehouses: A Problem and an Answer
Major fires often result in businesses closing for good, as they never recover. Even where a warehouse is not destroyed there can be significant commercial pressures on the owners and operators resulting from the large losses incurred.

A recent piece of research work has shown that warehouse fires accounted for the third highest losses in value in the UK behind those in the manufacturing and retail sectors. For example, a fire in a third party managed warehouse in Leicestershire in 2005 reportedly resulted in damage and consequential loss in excess of £130 million. The warehouse research project showed that nearly two thirds of the fires occurred in buildings which were classified as being of 'modern' construction. In many cases these lighter weight building techniques will lead to defensive firefighting in the event of a fire. Indeed there is more and more evidence to suggest that, where no life risk is present, exterior firefighting is now the 'norm'.

One of the key issues involved in warehouse design is the removal of a degree of compartmentation and this will have a direct bearing on the extent of direct loss. Thus early detection of the fire and the installation of suppression systems become ever more important especially as unoccupied buildings on the edges of conurbations may attract a slower response from the fire and rescue services.
