The Facts
  • Major fires often result in businesses closing completely. The economic cost of fire in the UK is on the increase. In 2008, commercial fire damage cost £865 million, up 15% on 2007.
  • Where a building is not destroyed there can still be significant commercial pressures on the owners and operators resulting from the large losses incurred. Business interruption following fires in 2008 resulted in insurance claims of around £200m.
  • In 2008, the Fire and Rescue Services attended fires in many different types of buildings including: Retail distribution – 3,700 fires; Restaurants, cafes, public houses etc – 2,600 fires; Industrial premises– 1,800 fires; Recreational – 1,400 fires
  • In the same year in the UK, there were 451 fire-related deaths and 12,200 non-fatal fire casualties. Fires in premises such as sleeping accommodation, especially those catering for the elderly, and hotels and guesthouses – with people not familiar with the building- present their own serious hazards. In particular, evacuation of the building at night with limited staff may prove difficult.
